Art and Music Education

"Every student in the nation should have an education in the arts.” This is the opening statement of “The Value and Quality of Arts Education: A Statement of Principles,” a document from the nation’s ten most important educational organizations. Expression in the arts helps students to make new connections, think ‘outside of the box,’ express themselves on many new levels, and mentally organize their observations and perceive the world in different ways.Art criticism helps students develop observation, analysis, interpretation and evaluation skills that can be transferred to other areas of study. Skills learned through the discipline of arts and music transfer to study skills, communication skills, and cognitive skills useful in every part of the curriculum. The Hebrew Day School arts and music programs produce young adults who are literate in both the visual arts and music.
