Hebrew Day School - Ann Arbor, Michigan Judaic and general studies, Immersion Hebrew programs

Holidays Curriculum (Grades 1-5)

All classes actively participate in celebrating Jewish holidays.

  • In first grade, children learn the rituals, customs, and blessings associated with each holiday. Each holiday has its own Tal AM songs, storybooks, and workbooks created especially to supplement and expand the children's emergent Hebrew vocabulary.

  • Second graders are encouraged to take a take a leadership role in in K-2 holiday programs. The students perform skits and sing throughout the year at various holiday celebrations, such as Rosh Hodesh and the Passover model seder. See a second grader's Purim illustration and summary of the Purim story here.
  • In the third and fourth grades, students review previous knowledge about ritual practice for each holiday. They then expand into learning the meaning, reason, and history behind the rituals. Students begin to lead many of the rituals as they celebrate each holiday in school and put in practice what they learned.
  • In fifth grade, students examine how the basic concepts relating to the holiday are expressed in its individual customs and how those customs embody moral values. Students examine Judaic art and objects from different communities and periods of time to get an additional historical perspective on Jewish life and holiday practice.
