Hebrew Day School - Ann Arbor, Michigan Judaic and general studies, Immersion Hebrew programs

Jewish History Curriculum (Grades 1-5)

The Hebrew calendar, holidays and texts are all used as a foundation for learning a time line of Jewish history, and Jewish history is also integrated into the general studies classroom.

  • In every grade, holidays are taught in their historical context.
  • The Torah and Prophets texts serve as a template for the study of ancient Jewish history.
  • The Giborei Ha-Chodesh program provides students with a fun entrĂ©e into the stories of Jewish historical figures from many different eras in Jewish history.
  • Jewish history is integrated into the general studies classroom; for example, the fourth graders learn about the Inquisition in the context of their study of colonial America and the reasons for earliest Jewish immigration to North America. Second and Fifth graders read biographies of famous Jewish Americans.
  • Students in the third and fourth grades learn about the history of Israel and Zionism, starting with the Jews who entered Israel in violation of British mandate law after the Holocaust, up to the establishment of the State of Israel. Students in the fifth grade learn about the modern state of Israel.
  • Students in the fifth grade also complete a family video history project, exploring their own families’ histories, identifying ways in which traditions were passed down. They compare and contrast values and customs throughout the generations. Using objects of meaning from their individual families as starting points, each student takes part in a class video production as a living document of Jewish family life. Two clips from the class of 2005 family history project video are presented here and here.
