HDS School Leadership

Board of Trustees: The governing body of the school is the Hebrew Day School Board of Trustees. The Board supervises the Head of School, sets tuition, raises funds, seeks opportunities for the school in the wider community, and, in conjunction with the Head of School, charts the long-term future of the institution. Aaron D. Fried, a current HDS parent, is the HDS Board President. Other members of the Board include current parents, alumni parents, and members of the community. All members of the Board are volunteers.

Head of School – Dina Shtull
Dina Shtull has been Head of School since September of 2002. Prior to that time she was an educational administrator and instructor for what was formerly called Project STaR, the program in Jewish Communal Leadership at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. She has many years of experience in Jewish education, including teaching for the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, part of the Melton Centre for Jewish Education of Hebrew University, and serving as a consultant for early Jewish childhood educators in Detroit. She served for 12 years as the Director of Judaic Programming for Tamarack Camps, and for two years as Chair of an international conference on informal Jewish education. Prior to moving to Ann Arbor, Dina held positions at the Jewish Federations in Cleveland and New York. Dina holds Bachelor of Arts Degrees from Barnard College and the Jewish Theological Seminary, a Master of Arts Degree in Social Work from Yeshiva University, and an M.B.A. from the University of Missouri. She is an HDS alumni parent and served on the HDS board for eight years while her children were in school. Administrative Director – Sari Shifrin
Sari Shifrin is a graduate of the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, where she earned both a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education and an M.Ed. She has a professional background as a teacher in both Jewish and public school settings, and in office administration. While raising her four children, Sari spent many years as a parent volunteer in the Ann Arbor Public Schools and was elected to a three-year term on the Ann Arbor Board of Education (1999-2002). Sari began at the Hebrew Day School in 2003.



Business Manager – Lesa Harrison
Lesa Harrison has a degree in Business Administration and Finance from Western State College in Colorado. She has been working in the field of accounting and finance for 15 years. Lesa began at Hebrew Day School in 2003.

 

 

Recruitment Associate - Ilana Gafni

Ilana Gafni worked for almost 20 years as a software developer engineer for a number of software companies. Gafni 's oldest grandson now attends the Chicago Hebrew Day school, and her granddaughter attends a Hebrew pre-school in Chicago. Ilana also owns Paper Station, a stationery business which she runs out of her home.

 

 

 

Development and Marketing Associate – Ali Reingold

Ali Reingold began at HDS in the fall of 2011.  She previously worked as Associate Director of Development Research at the University of Michigan.  She has a BA in Communications with a minor in Judaic Studies from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA.

 

 

 

Rabbinical Authority
Rabbi Robert Dobrusin of Beth Israel Congregation serves as the rabbinical authority for Hebrew Day School. Rabbi Dobrusin is consulted on any matter of Jewish law that affects the school. When appropriate, Rabbi Dobrusin makes decisions in consultation with other rabbis in the community. Rabbi Dobrusin has served as Rabbi of Beth Israel Congregation in Ann Arbor since 1988. He graduated from Brandeis University and was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1982. Rabbi Dobrusin has served as the Rabbi of the Hebrew Day School since arriving in Ann Arbor and has had various teaching capacities in the school. He and his wife Ellen have two children, Avi who graduated from HDS in 2004 and Michal, who graduated from HDS in 2006.
