Time At HDS

--Hadas, HDS ‘12

"Fifth grade at HDS meant being kings and queens, but it also meant great responsibility.  I hope this feeling still exists, because it is one of the most meaningful experiences in my life."

“Reflecting on my experiences at the Hebrew Day School, what emerges is the sense of community I developed during my years there and the force of its impact upon my own Jewish identity. Such extended exposure to many forms of Jewish culture, alongside my classmates, in the intimate environment of HDS was an opportunity for which I remain deeply grateful. It has certainly influenced my continued engagement with and exploration of the possibilities of Jewish identity today.”

“HDS helped shape who I am. Looking back, my time at HDS was one of my happiest.”

--Amy, Class of 1994

(Amy graduated with a degree in Environmental Science from the University of North Carolina,Chapel Hill.)

“My education at HDS helped shape who I am today. I often look back and remember the intensity and passion of my teachers, which reminds me to do what I love in order to be successful in life.”

--Naomi, Class of 1993

(Naomi was awarded an interdisciplinary degree in social science from MSU.)

“The Hebrew Day School helped me to develop my Jewish identity and become a person who actively participates in the Jewish community and supports the State of Israel. It left me wanting to continue to learn more and to give back. It also stretched my creativity and imagination and gave me a passion for the arts. I am thankful to my parents for sending me and allowing me the experience I gained there.”

--Carrie, Class of 1994

(Carrie graduated from Harvard University as a John Harvard Scholar, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, following which she worked with an international human rights foundation to re-establish Gorongoza National Park in Mozambique. She is currently working for United Nations Watch in Geneva.)

“I speak Hebrew, am able to teach religious school, and can recite all fifty states because of my education at HDS. I remember being shocked that not only did a fellow Tappan Middle School student not know all fifty states by name, but he didn’t even know that there WERE fifty states! I remember thinking, ‘wow, I know all the things they’re supposed to learn in public school, plus a whole other culture and language.’ I still keep in touch with friends from those days. I cherish the experience of being in an intimate school where you ARE someone. HDS taught me to love learning.”

--Mira, Class of 1987

(Mira received an M.A. in Jewish Communal Service from Hebrew Union College and a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California.)

“HDS served as an early catalyst for critical thinking, Jewish identity and social responsibility. Thanking back, having great teachers at HDS probably contributed to my decision to volunteer for Teach for America."
