Results of Standardized Iowa Tests, 2011
At Hebrew Day School, the standardized Iowa Test is given to 3rd to 5th graders. It includes three separate tests in reading, language, and mathematics. Separate scores are given for each of these categories, and a final Core Total score is also provided. Individual student scores are provided, as well as scores for how the school as a whole performed. The three separate scores are broken down into subcategories as follows:
-
Reading: Vocabulary, Comprehension
-
Language: Spelling, Capitalization, Punctuation, Usage & Expression
-
Mathematics: Conceptual/Estimation, Problems/Data; Computation
Below, is a summary of scores by grade in each of the three main areas, as well as each grade final Core Total. For each grade, the scores are presented in four different ways:
-
Grade Equivalent of Average Student Score: The score is like the score of a typical student in this grade.
-
Norms: These scores allow us to compare student scores with scores of other students and schools around the nation who take the same test. These scores give us an “external” look at our performance that is independent of our own assessment of student learning. Students will compete nationally rather than locally for educational and economic opportunities, so these comparisons are of interest.
-
Percentile Rank of Average Student Score – Private Norm: This score tells us how our students did relative to all students in this grade who took the test at the same time of year, and who are in private schools.
-
Percentile Rank of Average Student Scores – National Student Norm: This score tells us how our students did relative to all students in this grade who took the test at the same time of year, and who are in all schools (both public and private).
-
Percentile Rank of Average Student Scores – National School Norm: This tells us where our average student scores rank among other schools. For example, our students might have scored in the 93rd percentile, but 93% is in the 99th percentile among all the schools. That is, very few schools had an average student score higher than 93%.
