HDS celebrates 50 years, building renovation, and new library

14 September 2024

The Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor begins a remarkable year, completing its beautiful new library and school renovation while simultaneously celebrating its 50th year since its founding in 1974. This significant milestone not only celebrates half a century of academic excellence and a commitment to Jewish values but also marks a momentous leap into the future with state-of-the-art facilities.

As we stand at this threshold, our school community brims with excitement and pride, eager to honor our rich history and embrace the opportunities ahead.

A Legacy of Excellence

Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor was an idea born from community members’ commitment to and passion for Jewish education. This vision, which started as a school with just 12 students, has grown into a vibrant, joyful community of learners. As the only Jewish day school in Ann Arbor, we are deeply proud of our exceptional programming in secular academics, Judaic studies, Hebrew language immersion, fine arts, and social-emotional learning.

With talented teachers and specialists, we support all types of learners, equipping generations of students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to thrive in the world. Graduates of Hebrew Day School are not only successful in middle school and beyond but are also poised to make a difference in the world through the lens of their Jewish heritage.

Honoring Our Founders

The impact of our founders cannot be overstated. Their dedication and foresight laid the foundation for an institution that would become a pillar of Jewish education in Ann Arbor. Over the years, generations of school and community leaders have built upon this legacy, contributing to the thoughtful and high-quality education we provide.

Through their dedication and wisdom, these leaders have honed the original vision into the nurturing environment we have today, where students flourish academically, socially, and spiritually.

The Role of the Ann Arbor Community

The school’s growth and success are a testament to the unwavering support from the Jewish Federation, our partnerships with synagogues, and community members throughout Ann Arbor. This collective effort underscores the strength and unity of our community, making this milestone a celebration of shared achievements.

Impact of Alumni

Our alumni, spread across the globe, embody the spirit of resilience, curiosity, and communal responsibility that Hebrew Day School strives to instill. From leaders and artists to healers and helpers, our graduates contribute positively to their communities and the world, grounded in their Jewish identity.

Looking Forward: Renovations and a New Library

As we celebrate this moment, we are also on the cusp of another milestone — the completion of the Anna Schwalb Memorial Library and exciting school renovations. This ambitious project symbolizes our forward-thinking commitment to providing the best possible learning environment for our students.

The new facilities, set to be completed this fall, are designed to inspire curiosity, foster creativity, and support our mission of holistic education. The library, a hub for knowledge and exploration, features modern technology, comfortable study spaces, and an extensive collection of books and digital media.

A Celebration of Community

This moment is more than a physical transformation; it is a collective acknowledgment of our shared journey. It is a time to honor the visionaries who founded our school, the educators who have guided our students, and the families who have entrusted us with their children’s education.

The support of local leaders, rabbis, community members, and benefactors has been instrumental in our success. Their contributions have helped us grow, innovate, and provide the best education for our students.

Commemorating 50 Years

We have planned a series of events to commemorate this special 50th-anniversary year and the dedication of our new library. Join us at the Apples and Honey event on September 15 at the JCC of Ann Arbor, stop by our station for a treat, and celebrate with us at the Library Dedication on Sunday, November 17. In May 2025, we will host a grand celebration where current school families, staff, and alumni can honor our past and envision our future.

Here’s to 50 years of excellence and to many more years of growth, learning, and joy. Join us in celebrating this momentous occasion and stay tuned for updates on our new library and school renovation. Together, we are building a brighter future for our students and community.
